"Of all subjects taught in school, Physical Education is the only subject which, by the very nature of its content, has the potential to affect how a person will feel every moment of every day for the rest of his or her life"....Allen Russell
According to the American Obesity Association (AOA) the Causes of Childhood Obesity are:
• Physical Activity - Lack of regular exercise. • Sedentary behavior - High frequency of television viewing, computer usage, and similar behavior that takes up time that can be used for physical activity. • Socioeconomic Status - Low family incomes and non-working parents. • Eating Habits - Over-consumption of high-calorie foods. Some eating patterns that have been associated with this behavior are eating when not hungry, eating while watching TV or doing homework. • Environment - Some factors are over-exposure to advertising of foods that promote high-calorie foods and lack of recreational facilities
Try to keep your children as active as possible and limit their time in front of the TV, computer or electronic games.
Children will find all kinds of things to play if they are outside and running around. Not everything needs to be structured play with children. They do very well just winging it and it keeps them out of trouble as well.
Structured play is also very good. Getting children involved in organized sports is a great way to teach them rules and how to play as a team.
Structured or unstructured play keeps children in shape not only physically but mentally as well. It can teach children to be good citizens and people of character.
